PROGRAM AREA FOUR: EDUCATION IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

THE FORD FOUNDATION SHOULD SUPPORT ACTIVITIES TO STRENGTHEN, EXPAND, AND IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AND METHODS TO ENABLE INDIVIDUALS MORE FULLY TO REALIZE THEIR INTELLECTUAL, CIVIC, AND SPIRITUAL POTENTIALITIES; TO PROMOTE GREATER EQUALITY OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY; AND TO CONSERVE AND INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND ENRICH OUR CULTURE.

The Foundation should support activities directed toward:

  • The discovery, support, and use of talent and leadership in all fields and at all ages.

  • The clarification of the goals of education and the evaluation of current educational practices and facilities for the better realization of democratic goals.

  • The reduction of economic, religious, and racial barriers to equality of educational opportunity at all levels.

  • The more effective use of mass media, such as the press, the radio, and the moving picture, and of community facilities for non-academic education and for better utilization of leisure time for all age groups.

  • The assistance of promising ventures in education making for significant living and effective social participation.

  • The improvement of conditions and facilities for scientific and
