Affordable Housing

Boston, CDCs and local foundations have joined together to explore ways to bring social services to tenants in housing managed by CDCs.

Support by the Ford Foundation includes:

  • A national demonstration project that places homeless families in permanent housing, instead of welfare hotels, and uses the per diem "hotel rate" to rehabilitate permanent units. The purpose of this project is to link the emergency problem of homelessness with the long-term supply of affordable housing.

  • Projects that link comprehensive social services and housing. For example, a project designed by the Structured Employment/Economic Development Corporation (SEEDCO) may encourage joint sponsorship of housing and jobs by hospitals, universities, and community developers.

  • Evaluation of programs that help prevent eviction by providing services to very low-income tenants in housing managed or assisted by nonprofit developers.
