Action for Equal Opportunity

Major excerpts from an address by McGeorge Bundy at the annual banquet of the National Urban League, in Philadelphia, Aug. 2, 1966. In his first major speech after becoming President of the Ford Foundation, Bundy stated that achieving full equality for African Americans was the major task facing the United States, and that this would be the major domestic focus of the Foundation in the coming years.

Balance the Basics

One in a series of papers presented at an internal Foundation seminar on research on learning in the mid-1970's. This paper argues for the importance of writing along with reading and mathematics in the basic educational curriculum, examines reasons why writing is neglected and sets forth approaches for improving the teaching of writing, particularly the process-conference method. The author won the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in English and Teaching of English for this publication.

Bridging the Divide

A report summarizing a meeting convened by the Ford Foundation on reproductive health and human development issues in Istanbul in 1998. Building Bridges

Based on research conducted in 10 urban areas between 1991 and 1993 by Carnegie Mellon University and the Economic Development Assistance Consortium of employment training activities of community development corporations. The study concludes that networks of community organizations are often the best vehicles for employment training activities.

Changing Relations

A report to the Ford Foundation by the National Board of the Changing Relations Project. The board examined the everyday interactions and relations among new immigrants and residents in six communities: Albany Park, Chicago, Illinois; Garden City, Kansas; Houston, Texas; Miami, Florida; Monterey Park, California; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
