Andean Region and Southern ConeDemocratic Governance and Civil Society
We make grants to strengthen good governance and to foster social inclusion through participation in civil society and policymaking. We seek to promote and strengthen collaboration between the state and civil society organizations; to build effective and transparent government institutions and practices; and to strengthen the rule of law and advance social equity.
BrazilGovernance and Civil Society
We make grants to strengthen participation in democracy with the goal of reducing social injustice and inequality. Our support focuses on three areas: participative democracy and equity; the international capacity of organizations; and public security.
ChinaCivil Society
We help to strengthen the civic and political participation of people and groups in charting the future of their societies. Our grants concentrate on facilitating the growth and sustainability of community organizations, foundations and nonprofit service organizations, as well as on developing an enabling regulatory environment.
Eastern AfricaGovernance and Civil Society
East African democracies are relatively young. Our grants in this area support citizens and organizations aiming for greater participation in democratic governance. Working with universities, government bodies, civic organizations and international institutions, we fund two areas of work to achieve this goal. The first strengthens institutions that advocate for participatory democratic governance; the second fosters leadership development and promotes equity and participation in civil society.
India, Nepal and Sri LankaCivil Society and Social Justice
We support the development and growth of intermediary grant-making institutions to seed and strengthen indigenous philanthropies that operate at the local, state or national level to promote social change and social justice. We also make grants to strengthen and support the building of an accountable, transparent and credible civil society in the region and to enable the sector to become a positive force for peace, tolerance and inclusion through key strategies for interventions.
IndonesiaGovernance and Civil Society
We work to promote direct participation of poor and marginalized groups in formal decision-making institutions. We support activities that seek to strengthen the transparency and accountability of civil society organizations in order to increase their legitimacy to demand state accountability and conduct public fundraising.
Mexico and Central AmericaGovernance and Civil Society
We invest in the development of local, national and regional efforts to strengthen public, private and civil society accountability. These initiatives seek to expand access to information, promote freedom of expression, and strengthen citizen involvement in the oversight of government performance. We also address challenges to human security and democratization processes triggered by the emerging forces of organized crime, economic instability, market-driven reforms, and the de facto power of economic elites. We partner with civil society organizations, academic and governmental stakeholders and support initiatives to strengthen state action for the public good.
Middle East and North AfricaGovernance and Civil Society
We seek to foster dialogue and debate on some of the most important policy choices facing countries in the region. By expanding the space for independent discourse, scholars and civic leaders can better articulate a vision of society at a time of rapid social and economic change. Giving voice to a broad range of thinkers in the Middle East helps to advance debates on issues of governance, trade, technology, peace and security.
Southern AfricaGovernance and Civil Society
We seek to enhance and promote citizen participation in the public sphere to further democratic and responsive governance. Our grants seek to empower civil society organizations to effectively engage with decision-making processes; to explore innovative mechanisms to facilitate discussion and collaboration between civil society and governmental bodies; and to encourage opportunities for public debate on critical issues.
United StatesCivil Society
Our work in this area expands opportunities for people around the world to build and sustain civic life in ways that promote peaceful and just communities. We concentrate on strengthening the organizations, networks and movements through which people exercise citizenship. We also encourage voluntary associations to hold themselves and their governments accountable for their actions.
