| Andean Region and Southern Cone | Education Reform Our grantees seek to improve the capacity of educational systems and institutions to foster equal access and improve learning among the most disadvantaged populations. We make grants to test education models designed to increase educational achievement in schools serving urban poor, indigenous and Afro-descendant students; to develop empirical research for education officials, scholars and education reform activists; and to build Latin American networks to produce and exchange information and critical analyses of regional education policies. |
| China | Educational Reform and Cultural Diversity We seek to reinforce the ability of educational and cultural institutions to develop the expertise, values and leadership skills that promote and sustain democratic, equitable, peaceful and creative societies. Current work focuses on access and equity issues for poor and disadvantaged groups. |
| Eastern Africa | Education and Sexuality We provide East Africans, particularly women and youth, with the information necessary to make informed decisions and lead healthy lives. We fund efforts aimed at reducing the exposure of women and young people to HIV/AIDS. Another important focus of our work in this field supports policy reforms to increase the availability of safe and supportive educational opportunities for girls and women. |
| India, Nepal and Sri Lanka | Higher Education and Scholarship We support organizations that provide scholars and institutions with improved access to current information and electronic knowledge and that enhance their capacity to become key players in the global areas of scholarship. We also make grants to develop and maintain pluralistic and diverse communities in the region. |
| Indonesia | Education and Scholarship We work to develop intellectual resources, educate new leaders and thinkers, provide disadvantaged people with access to higher education, and support innovative and pluralist approaches to religious education. One of our key initiatives helped establish an international doctoral program in Inter-Religious Studies through the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studiesthe world’s first interdisciplinary doctoral program in religious studies, co-sponsored by Muslim, Christian and secular institutions that share a commitment to inter-religious dialogue |
| Mexico and Central America | Education and Sexuality We seek to increase access to higher education for the disadvantaged and to deepen public understanding of sexuality and its relationship to human fulfillment, culture and identity. Our grants support the education of new leaders and thinkers and foster knowledge and curriculums that support inclusion, development and civic life. We also support access to comprehensive sexuality education, both in school and outside of school, to help prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. We also support education that addresses the prevention of sexual violence and the achievement of gender equity. |
| Middle East and North Africa | Higher Education In 2005, we launched a program to strengthen higher education institutions in the region under the premise that when dynamic, high-quality education systems are in place, people can improve their lives and assist others in the pursuit of social equality and justice. Our grant making in this field targets educational quality at national universities, leadership training and knowledge development. It also helps Arab universities, operating in an increasingly global and market-driven economy, to provide interactive learning, extracurricular activities and opportunities to relate aspects of campus life to the various challenges of democratization and civic engagement. |
| Southern Africa | Education and Scholarship Our work aims to encourage diversity and equity in the post-secondary education system; to strengthen teaching and research throughout the system; to support the development of a new generation of scholars; and to ensure coherence between our higher education grants portfolio and the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa, which seeks to build capacity and support special initiatives to further the development of higher education in nine African countries. |
| United States | Education and Scholarship Our work supports educational institutions at all levels to expand access, innovate in the classroom, evaluate their efforts and share best practices. We also support interdisciplinary scholarship in the social sciences and humanities on the premise that complex problems are best approached from multiple perspectives, including a focus on gender, race, ethnicity, identity, religion and culture. |
| Vietnam and Thailand | Education and Scholarship We work to build intellectual resources and to support research in the social sciences. Under our Scholarship for the Future initiative, we bolster the research-oriented disciplines of sociology, cultural studies and anthropology. Training workshops, research grants, overseas scholarships and support for curriculum development help strengthen these fields and integrate them into international professional communities. |
