| Brazil | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
We make grants that focus on increasing public understanding of the role of sexuality and reproductive health in human fulfillment and development, as well as its interrelationship with equitable social change. We support research, programs and policy advocacy aimed at strengthening awareness and understanding of gender and sexuality issues and how they relate to the larger socioeconomic context among disadvantaged youth. We also support initiatives aimed at strengthening and expanding the Brazilian response to HIV/AIDS to better reach and care for those who remain underserved. |
| China | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
Our grants help communities and individuals build the human and social capacities they need to understand, articulate and address their sexual and reproductive health needs. We also support a comprehensive approach to addressing issues of quality of care in the family planning system and the role of community organizations in responding to HIV/AIDS issues in China. |
| Eastern Africa | Education and Sexuality
We provide East Africans, particularly women and youth, with the information necessary to make informed decisions and lead healthy lives. We fund efforts aimed at reducing the exposure of women and young people to HIV/AIDS. Another important focus of our work in this field supports policy reforms to increase the availability of safe and supportive educational opportunities for girls and women. |
| India, Nepal and Sri Lanka | Sexuality, Reproductive Health and Human Rights
Our work strengthens advocacy for women’s reproductive rights, with a particular focus on women from the “margins” and efforts to make reproductive and sexual rights central to the human rights discourse. To combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic—a major challenge in the region—we support education and awareness, as well as protection of the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. We also support increasing scholarship and expanding discourse on sexuality and sexual rights and seek to create an understanding of gender-based violence within different contexts of vulnerabilities. |
| Indonesia | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
We support work that engages women’s and youth organizations and professional associations in the design, implementation, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of government agency policies and programs. The goal is to ensure that sexual and reproductive health information and services meet people’s needs and respect their human rights, including their right to access to standard quality of care. This includes promotion of men’s understanding of their roles and responsibilities with regard to respecting the human rights of women, protecting women’s health, and supporting their partners’ access to sexual and reproductive health information and services. We also support community outreach and service centers for people living with HIV/AIDS. |
| Mexico and Central America | Education and Sexuality
We seek to increase access to higher education for the disadvantaged and to deepen public understanding of sexuality and its relationship to human fulfillment, culture and identity. Our grants support the education of new leaders and thinkers and foster knowledge and curriculums that support inclusion, development and civic life. We also support access to comprehensive sexuality education, both in school and outside of school, to help prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. We also support education that addresses the prevention of sexual violence and the achievement of gender equity. |
| Middle East and North Africa | Reproductive Health
We support regional institutions and initiatives focused on the issues of sexuality and reproductive health. Our grants fund research and policy work, scholarship and capacity-building, and the strengthening of institutions that serve women, whose rate of mortality and illness is disproportionately high. Because youth account for one-fifth of the region’s population, we support organizations that focus on broadening understanding of bodily integrity and reproductive health, particularly among young people, and help instill sexual and reproductive rights in disadvantaged communities. |
| Russia | HIV/AIDS and the Public Health System
We support organizations seeking to transform the public health debate in Russia and those working to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. Our work in this area focuses on two key efforts: helping people living with HIV/AIDS to organize, participate in national and regional development of HIV/AIDS policy and be ensured universal access to treatment; and supporting organizations seeking to introduce new modes of teaching, research and policy advocacy in the areas of public health and sexual behavior. |
| Southern Africa | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
Our work in this area investigates the intersection of socioeconomic factors and HIV/AIDS. We also seek to support promising interventions that effectively address the structural factors of gender inequalities and poverty as key social and economic determinants of vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. A key strategy is to address the grave imbalance in the vulnerability of young women and girls by supporting activities that promote positive gender norms and behavior and that increase access to appropriate HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health services. |
| United States | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
Our work focuses on identifying, documenting and disseminating models of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and education programs that meet the needs of women, men and youth in vulnerable communities; research on social and cultural influences on sexuality and reproductive health to inform public policy and promote widespread public understanding; and enforcement of sexual and reproductive rights as embodied in the agreements that emerged from the 1994 United Nations International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo and the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. |
| Vietnam and Thailand | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
We fund programs aimed at ensuring that vulnerable groups can exercise their right to access information and services for sexual and reproductive health and lead lives free of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy and violence. We also promote strengthening the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic by funding projects that focus on new approaches to preventing HIV transmission, address injection drug use and provide support for sexual minorities and women living with HIV. In Thailand, we are supporting research to explore and respond to the link between gender-based violence and women’s vulnerability to HIV infection. |
| West Africa | Sexuality and Reproductive Health
Using a rights-based approach, we support efforts that tackle four key development issues in the subregion: unwholesome adolescent sexuality; HIV/AIDS; gender-based violence, including harmful customary practices; and alarming maternal morbidity and mortality levels. Grants support grass-roots outreach and advocacy, multidisciplinary research for public knowledge building, and training of relevant practitioners. We also support the demonstration and wider adoption of alternative or best-practice strategies and programs that link health education and economic empowerment interventions for vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth. |
