Sadako Ogata, Ford Foundation Scholar-in-Residence, Honored with Two Awards
New York, N.Y. – October 11, 2002. Ford Foundation scholar-in-residence Sadako Ogata has been awarded the 2002 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding and the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal. The Fulbright prize recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions toward fostering understanding among peoples, cultures or nations. The Val-Kill medal honors individuals who exemplify Eleanor Roosevelt’s human rights legacy.
Mrs. Ogata, the former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, joins a distinguished list of previous Fulbright prize recipients, including former South African President Nelson Mandela, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. "Mrs. Ogata's achievements throughout her long career exemplify a passionate commitment to advancing the common bond of human dignity, and we are honored to recognize her with the 2002 Fulbright Prize," said Richard O. Lundquist, president of the Fulbright Association's Board of Directors.
