Participating Foundations

African Women's Development Fund (Ghana)
The African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), which was established in June 2000, is the first Africa-wide fundraising and grant-making fund. It supports organizations that work to promote women's rights and empowerment in Africa. AWDF funds organizations at the local, national and regional levels.

Arab Human Rights Fund (Lebanon)
The Arab Human Rights Fund is a newly created foundation devoted to promoting and enhancing the enjoyment of all human rights—civil, political, economic, social and cultural—in the Arab region.

Bangladesh Freedom Foundation
The Bangladesh Freedom Foundation supports innovative ideas and approaches in confronting challenges of fundamental freedoms of the citizens of Bangladesh. Set up in 1999 with Ford Foundation support, BFF provides grants to programs that promote three core freedoms—freedom from poverty, freedom from ignorance and freedom from oppression.

Brazil Human Rights Fund
The mission of the Brazil Human Rights Fund (Fundo Brasil de Direitos Humanos) is to promote human rights in Brazil by strengthening individuals and organizations that work to defend and protect human rights. It also seeks to create a national culture that supports the promotion of human rights.

CAF Russia
Charities Aid Foundation Russia is a nonprofit organization committed to raising the profile of giving, advocating for tax breaks and providing an increasingly broad array of services to charities and their supporters. CAF simplifies giving for individuals, offers solutions to help companies achieve their social and community goals, and provides high-quality, low-cost services to charities to help maximize the effectiveness of their funds.

Dalit Foundation (India)
The Dalit Foundation provides small grants and fellowships to Dalit individuals and community-based organizations working to eradicate caste-based discrimination in India. Established in June 2003, it is the first grant-making institution in South Asia whose mission, vision and program objectives focus exclusively on Dalit communities.

First Nations Development Institute � Eagle Staff Fund (United States)
Through a three-pronged strategy of education, advocacy and capitalization, the First Nations Development Institute is working to restore to Native American control and culturally compatible stewardship of their assets—be they land, human potential, cultural heritage or natural resources—and to establish new assets for ensuring the long-term vitality of Native American communities. The organization was formed in 1990.

Fund for Global Human Rights (United States)
The Fund for Global Human Rights was created in 2002 by a group of U.S. and European foundations to bring new financial and other support to struggling, often isolated human rights organizations. The fund's goal is to help ensure strong, indigenous human rights communities around the world. It works to increase the financial resources available for human rights activism and to facilitate access to the services and tools that activists need to be effective in the field.

Fundación Rostros y Voces (Mexico)
Fundación Rostros y Voces is a Mexican civil society institution that was founded in 1996 by a group of social leaders involved in community organizing, affirmation of human rights and civic participation. Its primary objectives are to mobilize resources to foster social development and to increase public awareness of and engagement in social causes.

India Foundation for the Arts
The India Foundation for the Arts is an independent, professionally managed grant-making organization for the arts, established as a public trust in 1993 and headquartered in Bangalore. Its mission is to fill gaps in the support available for the arts in India and to introduce new approaches to arts philanthropy. IFA focuses on strengthening underlying artistic processes, overcoming constraints on creativity, seeding innovation, addressing systemic issues in the arts sector and connecting the arts to other fields of human endeavor.

Kenya Community Development Foundation
The Kenya Community Development Foundation, established in 1997, is Kenya's only community foundation and has a mandate to build capacities of community organizations and projects aimed at improving people's welfare. KCDF also works with communities to mobilize resources and set up permanent assets in the form of endowments.

National Foundation for India
The National Foundation for India was set up in 1992 as a nonprofit charitable trust and began making grants in 1995 to support its fundamental mission: "to address the issues of poverty, equity and national integration by supporting a plurality of development initiatives." NFI is reorganizing its grant-making programs. New themes will be community health, elementary education, livelihood security, local governance, peace and justice, citizens and society, and development journalism.

New Israel Fund
Founded in 1979, the New Israel Fund advances civil rights and social justice for all Israelis, under the belief that the only secure Israel is a just Israel. An international partnership of Israelis, Americans, Canadians and Europeans, the fund supported Israeli social change organizations and advocacy groups and is widely credited with transforming the social justice and human rights communities in Israel.

Puerto Rico Community Foundation
The Puerto Rico Community Foundation (Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico) is a nonprofit philanthropic organization whose purpose is to support processes of change in the communities of Puerto Rico. It works to develop the capacities of communities to achieve social transformation and economic self-sufficiency by stimulating investment in communities and maximizing the impact and yield of each contribution.

Russian Human Rights Fund
The Russian Human Rights Fund is being established as a national foundation with broad public support and an endowment. Its staff will draw upon 10 years of combined experience and best practices to create an organization that will be a key player in advancing human rights. The foundation will work to develop interaction between the third sector and broader society by connecting the human rights agenda with a social justice agenda.

South Asia Women's Fund (Sri Lanka)
The South Asia Women's Fund was formally established in 2004. It is a regional grant-making institution committed to creating and promoting a common understanding of gender discrimination and social justice for South Asian women. Since March 2005, SAWF has funded nongovernmental organizations in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka that implement actions to improve the status of women and to empower them.

Stefan Batory Foundation (Poland)
The goal of the Stefan Batory Foundation, which was established in 1988, is to build a civil society of individuals who are aware of their rights and duties and who actively participate in public life and take responsibility for themselves and their community. Its primary areas of activity include supporting civic initiatives that increase public participation and create equal opportunities for the most vulnerable or disadvantaged social groups; supporting initiatives designed to provide all citizens with access to information and justice; and implementing projects aimed at building strong relations with the East and the West.

TrustAfrica (Senegal)
TrustAfrica is a new African foundation that promotes peace, economic prosperity and social justice throughout the continent. The foundation hosts dialogues, makes grants and provides technical assistance to enable African institutions to work together to develop lasting solutions to the continent's most pressing challenges. TrustAfrica's core program areas are Peace and Security, Regional Integration, and Citizenship and Identity.
