Tackling Root Causes of Problems
The Ford Foundation office for Eastern Africa opened in Nairobi in 1963, and we focus our work on Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Our longstanding presence in the region is characterized by tackling root causes of problems and working directly with those affected to find solutions. Since its inception, the office has provided nearly $270 million to hundreds of innovative organizations. In 2008, we committed more than $14.5 million to projects in the region.

A Politically Evolving Region
The nature of our grant making in East Africa has evolved as the region has changed politically and economically. Before 1980, we focused primarily on economic development. From 1980 to 1995, our grantees supported the transition of East African nations to constitutional democracies, including instituting legal reforms and strengthening both state institutions and nongovernmental organizations. We have also focused on helping poor and marginalized people gain the information, skills and assets necessary to improve their lives and participate more fully as citizens.

Building Partnerships for Peace and Social Justice
Today, our work supports efforts to expand democratization and civic participation; protect the rights of women and girls; expand economic opportunity; strengthen the capacity of local philanthropies and nonprofits; advance public service media; and build new partnerships for peace and social justice.
