First International Office
The Ford Foundation established an office in India in 1952 at the invitation of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was the foundation's first office outside the United States and remains one of the largest of our international field operations. The New Delhi office also serves Nepal and Sri Lanka. In 2008, our grant making in the region exceeded $23.5 million.
During our first two decades, we operated both as a grant-making organization and an implementing agency and focused primarily on agricultural and rural development. We maintained a large staff that provided technical assistance and operated many projects directly. Since 1972, we have functioned mainly as a grant maker, providing funds to academic institutions, research organizations, government agencies and civil society groups.
Evolving Priorities
The foundation's program of support in the region has evolved in response to changing needs and priorities. Today, our grants are designed to strengthen individual and institutional capabilities, to support innovative concepts and approaches and to promote the sharing of knowledge. Our work focuses on expanding economic opportunity, strengthening civil society organizations, sexuality and reproductive health issues and natural resource rights.
