Strengthening Civil Society
Established in 1962, the office for Mexico and Central America seeks to strengthen participation in civil society and help eradicate poverty and injustice by supporting organizations that work closely with rural, indigenous and other vulnerable groups in Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Grant Strategies
Our grants support organizations and projects that reflect the three main Ford Foundation programs.

Our Peace and Social Justice goals are to:

  • Promote and protect human rights for all, especially disadvantaged groups
  • Advance pluralism and diversity
  • Encourage regional cooperation on issues that transcend borders, particularly human security

Our Asset Building and Community Development goals focus on helping low-income people:

  • Build financial, human, social and natural assets
  • Attain sustainable improvement in their families and communities, as well as greater participation in society
  • Achieve greater control over their own finances and natural assets

Our Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom goals are to:

  • Promote knowledge and creativity as vital to resolving conflicts and bringing about progress in society
  • Foster greater access to higher education for the disadvantaged
  • Support sexuality education to improve health outcomes and gender equity
  • Uphold freedom of thought as an essential building block of just and plural societies

Across these program areas, we place emphasis on the concerns of women and the region's indigenous and afro-descendant peoples. We also address how increasing population flows within the region and migration outside the region pose new challenges to fulfilling the goals described above.
