Each regional office makes grants in fields that most effectively address problems in the region. In the Moscow office, we support efforts in four key areas:
Environmental Justice and Sustainable Community Development
We seek to empower local communities to assert control over their natural resources and environment in ways that balance environmental restoration and resilience with community development. Our work in this field focuses on two primary areas: support for projects that ensure that communities are included in the development and implementation of natural resource management strategies; and support for efforts to create sustainable livelihoods in rural, forest-based communities.
HIV/AIDS and the Public Health System
We support organizations seeking to transform the public health debate in Russia and those working to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. Our work in this area focuses on two key efforts: helping people living with HIV/AIDS to organize, participate in national and regional development of HIV/AIDS policy and be ensured universal access to treatment; and supporting organizations seeking to introduce new modes of teaching, research and policy advocacy in the areas of public health and sexual behavior.
Human Rights and Justice
We seek to increase the ability of human rights groups to achieve significant improvements in the observance of human rights and address the most critical challenges in human rights protection in Russia. Our work in this field focuses on two primary approaches: strengthening the nongovernmental human rights infrastructure; and removing the key impediments to implementation of human rights, such as lack of access, arbitrary law enforcement and the limited impact of international human rights decisions.
Media, Arts and Culture
We support organizations that seek to preserve the democratic traditions of a multinational Russian culture under new historical and economic conditions, as well as groups whose activities are aimed at improving the professionalism of responsible media. Our work in this field focuses on three primary areas: support for cultural innovation through contemporary arts; tolerance and diversity through media; and preservation and development of Russia’s audiovisual archives.
