Early Focus on East-West Relations
Beginning in the early 1950s, the foundation sponsored a range of activities in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. From 1950 to 1988, the foundation spent about $60 million to analyze key issues in East-West relations and to promote freedom of expression, international cooperation and respect for human rights.
Democratization and Economic Reform
In 1989, the foundation's Board of Trustees authorized staff to begin making grants in direct support of institutions in the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary and, subsequently, in Czechoslovakia to advance the process of democratization and economic reform. From 1989 to 1994, the foundation spent about $30 million on these projects.
The foundation office in Moscow opened in January 1996. Since then, the foundation has spent more than $120 million supporting projects, all in the Russian Federation. Today our work focuses on four key areas: Environmental Justice and Sustainable Community Development; HIV/AIDS and the Public Health System; Human Rights and Justice; and Media, Arts and Culture.
