Early Presence in the Region
The Ford Foundation has been making grants in Southern Africa for more than 40 years from a variety of national and regional offices. In 1993, the Southern Africa office was established in Johannesburg; today it supports a broad range of nongovernmental organizations, post-secondary education institutions and research centers in the region. In 2008, we provided more than $16.5 million in grant-making support to the region.

Responding to Current Needs
Today, our grant making focuses on reducing poverty and inequality, promoting access to resources and services, and supporting good governance and the continued growth of a robust democracy.

With a rights-based approach to all of our grant making, our work seeks to contribute significantly to livelihood opportunities and skills development; to promote the inclusion of women and disadvantaged or vulnerable individuals and communities in the programs we support and in the decision-making processes that affect them; to improve access to higher education; and to encourage the development and strengthening of civil society organizations and other sectors of Southern African society.

The Southern Africa office works closely with the three other foundation offices in Africa—Cairo, Nairobi and Lagos—on continentwide and cross-regional issues.
