A Regional Approach
The Ford Foundation's West Africa office is based in Lagos, Nigeria. Our work in the region dates to 1958; our first grant supported training for public service professionals in Nigeria. In 2008, we provided more than $11.6 million in grants for projects in West Africa.

Our national grant making focuses primarily on Nigeria which, given the scale of its needs, receives over half of the grants made by our office. We also make grants for regional activities, especially in Francophone West Africa. Our work in this area consists of support for key subregional organizations and institutions working on human rights; sexuality and reproductive health; and economic development.

Primary Objectives
The foundation's work in West Africa addresses some of the region's most pressing problems by focusing on a limited number of issues. Our grant strategies seek to:

  • Strengthen the enforcement of human rights
  • Empower women and young people by improving the quality of their health and social status
  • Enhance the livelihoods of the poor, particularly urban and rural areas
  • Promote transparent and accountable government
