Since opening an office in China in 1988, the Ford Foundation has worked with our grantees and partners to provide constructive support for the Chinese domestic reform agenda and China’s desire to engage with the world as a source of ideas and experience. The roots of this work are in the fields of economics, law, and international relations.

Today, based on 40 years of successful economic and social reform, China has emerged on the world stage with development ideas and resources to share and invest across the global south. Given China's emerging economic and governance role in the world, we are developing programming related to China’s influence on these issues and on leveraging China’s growing domestic wealth for social good.

Partners include policy-making and research institutions, NGOs and philanthropy organizations, and government agencies. Many grantees already participate in China’s internationalization and are active in global south platforms, develop and implement projects in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and are conceptualizing a global governance role for China.
